Few days ago I noticed a photograph of mine in a blog, its one of my oldest photographs, taken over 8 years ago in Tanjore, India. It was right after the near by school bell rang and children came storming out. I was standing in a tower, looking down at a field that runs through the compound.
Good Morning! Chennai!

The Kalaripayatt book by Shaji John with my photographs, was released this thursday.
A few months before, I worked on creating the images for the book, although I am not very excited about the layout of the book, this was a special project for me, since its a subject that I am very interested in and I loved working on composing these images. I wish we had more time to work during the shoot, but since the light was dying fast, we had to wrap it up, but still I am happy with the way the images have turned out.
This project was conceived as a black and white photo project for print, it was shot digitally and processed as a monochrome image. I worked on creating a specific tonal range for the images, and although some clipping does occur, I am happy with the images.
The first photograph in this post did not make it into the book, but it is still my favorite because it portrays the relationship between - Shaji, the teacher and Promod, the student- more accurately that any other photograph.
